These are all humpback whale calves we've meet in the waters of Maui over the course of our research. For each one, we have a range of details, including gender, relative age and activity at the time of sighting.
For some calves, we may have the mother's fluke picture, which gives us the chance follow the mother-calf pair as they head to their feeding grounds.
For other calves, we look closely at the patterns of wrinkles and grooves around the eyes and even use cookie cutter scars (the small, round white circular shapes) to potentially identify this calf as a yearling, or even as an adult in future seasons in Hawaii.
